I've heard from several people that they would be fascinated to hear about a Korean healthcare experience, so I've chosen to share a bit here. Read more below...

Several months ago I went to the doctor for a routine checkup and she discovered a cyst on my right ovary. It was difficult to understand, but she repeatedly stated that I would need surgery and gave me a referral form to a nearby hospital. I went home skeptical that surgery would actually be necessary, but was able to piece together her notes in order to do some of my own research. It turns out that the cyst was actually a teratoma, a benign tumor that often contains skin, hair, and teeth (gross, I know!). After looking at several research articles, I began to agree with my doctor that surgery may be the wisest move. While the tumor was not immediately harmful or painful, it would continue to grow larger and had the potential to cause more serious problems, as well as being more difficult and painful to remove down the road. Additionally, the incredibly low cost of Korean healthcare made the option of having surgery here even more appealing. So, I used the referral form she gave me and went to a hospital just a few minutes from our apartment. There, they performed a CT scan to confirm the type and size of the tumor, and then we scheduled a date for surgery. It was as simple as that.

Fast forward to the beginning of August, at the beginning of our week-long summer vacation. I found myself in a five-person hospital room, awaiting surgery the next day. Below is a photo of me in my pre-op outfit...pajama top and elastic-waisted skirt. So flattering! You can spot the mini-fridge and corner of the cot allotted to each bed in the room.

My surgery went smoothly, with only a few minor complications. I ended up with four small incisions in my abdomen and spent four nights in the hospital recuperating. I was advised to walk frequently the day after my surgery. The photo below is the view from the end of our fifth-floor hallway. I was at St. Mary's Hospital, a Catholic institution, and it looked like the buildings were housing for the nuns or apartments for elderly people that are cared for by the nuns.

When it came time for discharge, I was given a bill and instructed, by the nurse, to report to a desk on the second floor to pay. Total cost: approximately $650. A miniscule number compared to that of a surgery in the U.S.

Overall, it was a fascinating cultural experience to stay in a Korean hospital. In contrast to American hospitals, patients here are cared for primarily by family members with nursing staff providing only minimal care (administering medications, changing dressings, checking vital signs, etc.). Most of the patient rooms at this hospital contain five beds, each of which has a cot (seen above) that can be pulled out from under the bed for family members to sit and sleep on. The entire setup of the unit was designed so that family members would have space to relax, prepare food for patients, and stay with them throughout the day and night. Nursing staff were available and attentive, though surprisingly sparse compared to my experiences in American hospitals.

There was a general feeling of respect for the patient and recognizing them as an intelligent human who knows their own body and should be trusted to take care of themselves. It was completely normal to see patients wandering around outside the hospital, IV poles in tow, fulfilling their mandated exercise (and taking a smoke break, of course). Leaving the hospital, I felt comfortable going home without nursing care because I had already done many daily tasks on my own or with Caleb's help. I knew we would manage to heal up.

At this point I am all but healed up and am just awaiting a final ultrasound in a couple weeks to confirm that everything is still healing as normal. I am so glad that we were able to take care of this problem here in Korea where the stress level of receiving and paying for healthcare are next to nothing compared to my experiences in the U.S. Though I could have done without fish soup for lunch, I managed to come away having had a positive experience. We're grateful!Caleb and Dorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05175613109580799464noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6721157484616961981.post-67525377275447624682014-07-27T01:59:00.001-07:002014-07-27T06:47:37.898-07:00And...we're backAfter an unintended hiatus of a couple months we're back to the blogosphere. To account for our absence, we have a whole load of cell phone photos documenting a few of the more fun moments of our summer thus far.

We attended a soccer game at the local stadium with a few friends. The most remarkable part of the experience was not the actual playing, but the fact that an entire section of the stadium was made up of fervent Pohang fans who sang, drummed, and chanted for the duration of the game. Impressive.
During the month of June, I filled in for a kindergarten teacher at another school branch. It was exhausting, certainly, but those mischievous little urchins won my heart in the end. Below are a few of them.
There is a bowling alley a couple blocks from our apartment. Koreans take bowling very seriously and the environment is totally different than those in the U.S. It is a fun, cheap evening though, and one night I miraculously scored 139, about 60 points higher than my usual average. Proof below.

As expected, Korean baseball games also have a different feel than those in America. Attendees are allowed to bring in as much food as they can carry, so we saw people snacking on everything from Krispy Kreme donuts to entire pizzas to ramen noodles. Similar to the soccer game, an entire section of the stadium was comprised of chanting fans that never ceased. In the end, we were disappointed with the quality of baseball playing, (final score: 15-3) but it was fun to experience the American pastime in a new setting.
This photo is entitled, "Caleb the Art Thief."
If you look closely, you can see a painting in his left hand. One of our favorite "games" is to scout the trash people put out on the streets. Our most recent prize is a cheap but sturdily framed Modigliani print. We've both been amazed at how nice it is to have in our space. We're surrounded by rectangular concrete buildings with only occasional exposure to art, and weren't aware of how starved we are for beauty.
Beach afternoon. We don't spend much time on this beach because just out of frame, to the right, is an enormous steel factory jutting into the sea. The threat of pollution is ever-present. But apart from the sand fleas, it did make for a pleasant afternoon.

This last weekend was a luxurious four days long thanks to Children's Day (a Korean holiday honoring children) and Buddha's Birthday falling on a consecutive Monday and Tuesday. We had been wanting to make it up to Bogyeongsa, a temple and string of waterfalls north of Pohang, for quite a while and the extended weekend was the perfect opportunity. There is a bus that regularly makes the trip, but is quite a long ride. Instead, we were able to ride along with some friends who have a car and made a lovely afternoon of it. (Thanks, Sean and Kristina!)

We visited on Buddha's birthday so there was quite a crowd of people around the temple area. We made a beeline for the trail, and soon after veered from the walkway to freestyle it in the riverbed. This was probably the best decision we could have made because we had the river and the rocks to ourselves most of the time, rather than sharing the narrow trails.

There are twelve waterfalls along this portion of the river, some larger than others. We had a great time climbing up the waterfalls, hopping rocks, and dreaming of summer days when it will be warm enough to plunge head-first into the water.
We're continuing to adjust to the little things that are different here in Korea. We've gradually widened our cooking repertoire in our oven and microwave free kitchen, explored more and more parts of the city, and are feeling more and more at home.

It has been a beautiful spring, though we are occasionally bothered by something called "yellow dust." This dust falls from the sky, coating cars, streets, and the floors near open windows with a fine yellow coating. We've read that the dust is a combination of pollen, sand blown over from the Gobi desert, and pollutants from factories in China. On bad days, it feels oppressive and the air is hazy. Thankfully, we had a solid three days of rain last week that seemed to settle the dust and clear the air.

Caleb has a great rain jacket that keeps out the rain during our walks to work, but I don't have a good hooded rain coat. Instead, I just borrow the detachable hood from my winter coat and pair it with my lightweight spring jacket, amusing Caleb to no end. He insisted on taking my photo...

By the way, this photo shows that street directly outside our apartment building. There are quite a few other foreigners that live in the building right across the street, and we have just about every convenience we need within a ten minute walk.

The photo below was taken in a restaurant a couple blocks from our apartment. For some reason they have several huge stuffed animals displayed throughout the dining room that captured Caleb's heart...so precious.

A cherry blossom festival is held there every year and we've heard from many people that it is THE PLACE to see the blooms. We chose to go a week before the festival in an effort to avoid some of the crowds and are fairly certain that we caught the blossoms in their prime. The afternoon was perfectly warm and sunny, and I (Dori) was happy to notice a tinge of pink on my nose the next day...bring on that summer tan!

We happened upon the end of a drum demonstration and the beginning of a parade that carried on for several hours throughout the hillside. There were many people dressed up in traditional garb, though we were unable to determine who exactly they were supposed to be. It was fun to imagine what the valley might have looked like filled with its original citizens.

This entire field was planted with yellow "wildflowers." It was a pretty scene, to be sure, but it was amusing to watch so many people trying to take get a photo that looked like they were alone in a vast field of flowers. In this country, taking posed photos is serious business and there is no shame in acting the part of tourist...everyone does it!

From what we could tell, this is an archaeological dig, in process. We couldn't get very close, but it is exciting to think about what could still be buried there!
I was mostly taking photos with my film camera that day so Caleb manned the cell phone camera. Unfortunately, that means fewer photos of him and more of me.

This river was absolutely gorgeous. We had a bit of a laugh because there were several groups of Korean tourists on the other side of the river watching us prance around on the rocks and dip our toes in the water. The rocks didn't extend all the way across so they weren't able to do the same, and we felt a bit like caged animals putting on a show. Then again, that's how we feel quite often, even if we're just trying to operate chopsticks. We had good fun, nonetheless:)
The sign reads, "This is Silla flower garden where loving couples come from around the world." Of course, we had to make an ironic statement.
Excited by the prospect, though doubtful that one existed in our city, we looked forward to a chance to hang out with cats while drinking americanos.

We were wandering the downtown area this last Saturday and stumbled upon a cute little cafe called 1944...with cats peering at us from the windows!
This post is very late in coming, but we wanted to take the time to get a few historical facts straight before posting it. About three weeks ago, a couple fellow foreign teachers invited us to join them on a trip to Gyeongju, a city south of Pohang. We weren't sure what to expect, but were excited to get out of town for an afternoon. Before we came to Korea, Caleb had heard that there was an archaeological dig close to Pohang and we had kept it in the back of our minds that we'd like to find it eventually. We were excited to find out that the dig and many other historical sites were in Gyeongju.

One of the great things about Korea is the relative ease of travel travel throughout the country. To get to Gyeongju we simply bought a ticket for about $2.50 at the bus terminal, hopped on board, and were in a different city in about thirty minutes. I suppose this is how it works just about anywhere, but we were both surprised by how truly easy it was.

The city of Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient Silla kingdom (57B-935AD). All throughout the city are vast parks that are dotted with mounds which contain the tombs of various Kings and other noblemen and women. The photos below are not great quality (cell phone photos) and don't show the absolute beauty of the spaces. The abruptness of the tombs were eery and awe-inspiring at the same time. Everywhere we looked was beautiful, despite the yellowed grass and bare trees of winter. We have been told by many people that Gyeongju is THE PLACE to go to see the cherry tree blossoms and plan to go back in a couple weeks.

By the time we left the palace, we were quite famished after an afternoon of walking. We found a "traditional Korean food" restaurant on the walk back to the bus terminal and decided to give it a try. In Korean homes and many sit-down restaurants, it is expected that guests remove their shoes at the door, as was the case at this restaurant. The tables are also low to the ground and guests sit on the floor. Korean meals are almost always comprised of multiple small side dishes, dipping sauces, soups, and meats. Below is a photo of our meal for four.

Up until this day, we had had almost entirely positive experiences with Korean food. However, we soon realized that the end of a long, tiring day is not the best time to try suspicious-appearing foods. We were hungry and craving comfort food. Instead, we ate mini-crabs coated in a red, spicy sauce, crayfish soup, (maybe) oysters in red, spciy sauce, and anchovies as condiments.
This is primarily because I look forward and enjoy it and Caleb, well, he doesn't. This post may not be of much interest to many if cooking isn't your thing, but for me, settling into a kitchen is what makes a place feel like home. Being able to exist in it comfortable feels important.

We weren't sure what to expect kitchen-wise when coming to Korea, other than small and "sparsely finished." It is those things. Provided by the school was a large skillet, medium-sized stockpot, a wooden cutting board, chef's knife, two spoons, two set of chopsticks, and two plates, bowls, and saucers. Our cooking area is about 1.5 meters wide and includes a sink with a draining board and a counter top with a gas range on top. We extended or work space by buying a counter-height rolling cart from one of the other foreign teachers leaving soon, and it has been incredibly helpful to have another prep surface. Below is a poor-quality shot of our kitchen right now. It's cozy!

We managed to cook several meals using those utensils and Caleb was, in fact, the first to cook anything on our stove: a stir fry of beef, broccoli, onions, and potatoes using chop sticks to stir things in the pan. It was good!

Since then, we've acquired a rice cooker, toaster, off-brand magic bullet, and electric kettle, also from teachers leaving the country, that have proved invaluable. We're still flipping fried eggs with two spoons, spreading jelly with the back of a spoon, and flipping browning meat with chopsticks, but we've become quite comfortable with the sparseness.

One of the most unfortunate things about the kitchen is a lack of oven. Though some people purchase toaster ovens, the investment doesn't make sense for us at this point and we're just managing without. It is a sad thing to have to go without our favorite roasted veggies and the option of baking bread or cookies, but I'm sure we'll survive. I have been surprised at how useful a tool a rice cooker can be. I have managed to "roast" a chicken in it with quite delicious results!

We've grown more and more comfortable with shopping for food at emart, a Meijer-like store just a few blocks away, but recently we've taken advantage of a local outdoor market that is open on days ending with 4 and 9. It takes place just a few blocks away and offers a plethora of fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, bulk Korean side dishes (including kimchi and other preserved vegetable "salads"), eggs, and just about any other fresh food product one might need. They have fresh seafood, as well, that we haven't yet taken advantage of. Just yesterday we witnessed an octopus trying to climb out of its tub of water. Fortunately, a passerby righted the situation by throwing the poor guy back in just as it was about to fall to the ground.

We'll try to post updates about new and/or fun eating experiences but I'd better run for now. We have a pot of meat and veggies stewing on the stove. We'll see how it turns out!Caleb and Dorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05175613109580799464noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6721157484616961981.post-39087955908230505642014-02-19T01:06:00.003-08:002014-02-19T01:06:58.801-08:0019 February 2014A quick story...
The other day C and I were sitting at a bus
stop after work. It was about nine in the evening and we were both happy to
hunch over our respective books during the twenty minute wait for our ride. I
happened to cough while sitting on the bench, thanks to a cold that has been
persistent since soon after our arrival. However, instead of the cough just
trailing off into the darkness I received an echo cough! I looked up and found
that it had been from a little boy about five years old; he was standing nearby
with his hand over his mouth, just like me, staring curiously and wondering
what I would do in response. When I said hello, he smiled and ran behind his
mother, peeking back at me from between her legs. Many children here are
unabashedly curious about our Western appearance and it has been fun to
interact with them. This little one was bashful, but after encouragement from
the mother, we managed to exchange halted pleasantries before their bus
arrived.
When Caleb and I became engaged and started planning our wedding, we knew from the start that we wanted something simple. Caleb envisioned us getting married in the middle of a field, surrounded by friends and family. I wanted something that would allow for simplicity and low levels of stress. With those ideas in mind, we decided to get married in the Elkhart Conservation Club, which is a beautiful patch of woods adjacent to my parents' backyard. Undeterred by the threat of cold and snow that comes with a December wedding, we opted for an outdoor ceremony and picked out a beautiful spot nestled between trees near the creek (and close to the bench where Caleb proposed).

This site is our solution to the dilemma of wanting to maintain connection with family and friends, whilst being frustrated with the distracting clutter of Facebook. Our hope is that people will be able to check in for a quick update, if they'd like, without having to go through other social media. We plan to share stories of our experiences as we adapt to life in another country.
Two days ago we received notification that our tickets to South Korea had been purchased; we will depart from Chicago on February 9 to begin our adventure. Here's to dreaming of kimchi!Caleb and Dorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05175613109580799464noreply@blogger.com2
